Gold is tradition, white gold is clean, silver is fresh, platinum is chic but expensive, while titanium is clean and fresh and chic and inexpensive. In it’s natural state titanium rings are white with a hint of smoked grey, close to platinum in color, and with much richer and deeper tones than silver or white gold. However this metal can be altered through a thermal or electrolytic treatment which changes or enhances its color. Such rings are said to be anodized, and although not a durable as plain titanium, the results are stunning.

Unique titanium rings can be accented in blues, teal greens, and rich wine colors that are impossible to achieve with other precious metals.

Will Our Titanium Wedding Rings Really Last Forever?

No. They may outlive you, but they won’t last forever. Depending on the grade you choose for your jewelry, they will scratch and become worn looking EVENTUALLY. It is more a question of what you do while wearing your rings. Most rings, be they gold or silver or platinum, look perfect for a year or two and then begin to show wear.

In the same manner, titanium rings will need a polish or a scrub to refresh them, but the great thing about them is that they will NEVER tarnish like silver or become stained. They can also be refinished if you want to maintain the original shine or frosted look that has dulled over the years.

There is another thing about titanium rings, and that is its ability to withstand dents and deformation. I have seen so many expensive gold wedding bands totally bent out of shape. This will not happen with a titanium ring. It would take such an enormous amount of abuse that it is doubtful your hand would withstand it.

Emergency Removal of Titanium Rings

It has been brought up recently that titanium rings can be dangerous because they are so strong that in the case of an emergency, should the rings need to be cut off, they will be difficult to cut through. While it is true that titanium is strong and damage resistant, hospitals and paramedics have electric ring cutters that easily cut through any ring. So it is not an issue of titanium or gold or silver but just an issue of wearing rings in the first place. If you work in a profession where your wedding ring may create a danger to you or to those who you work with, no matter if they are made of it is best to consider removing them.

What about Titanium Wedding Ring Comfort?

Titanium rings are comfortable in general, but jewelers use the term “comfort fit” which applies specifically to the roundness of the edges and the inner dome shape of a ring -the rounder the edges and the better shaped interior dome of a ring the more comfortable. This science of comfort has been perfected for gold wedding rings, and for many titanium products this is also true. They are either “comfort fit” or “semi comfort fit” except for some which are known as slim, stealth or the ones with tension settings.

If you are not a ring wearer and you are concerned about the square edges of a very modern titanium wedding ring that you have selected, I recommend, before buying online, trying a few rings that are similar in a jewelry shop near you.

Is Titanium Ring Resizing the same as resizing other metals?

No. If the difference in size is greater than what can be done by titanium rod tightening then a wire (or “drop”) is inserted into the inner side of the ring. Most people comment that it doesn’t bother them, however it can change the way the ring feels against your skin if you are sensitive. If the size difference is really big, then it can be expensive to resize because the entire ring will need to be, practically, remade.

It can cost $50 – $100 to resize a titanium ring, and therefore may be better to buy a new one. If it is your ring then perhaps it will be a small price to pay.

Engraving Titanium Wedding Rings

Titanium rings, be they men’s rings, ladies sets, wedding or engagement rings can all be engraved the same as gold or silver. Engraving titanium wedding rings is often included in the price of the rings.

Titanium is Ti with an atomic number 22. It´s aerospace and shuttle ship friendly. Its resistant to almost everything that could harm it. Its very people friendly and doesn’t even get rejected if used as a bone in your body. Its stronger than steel and lighter than platinum.

It can be alloyed with iron, aluminum and tin. It can become anything from a jet engine to a bicycle frame or even end up as a filling in your tooth. It can be shaped into a piece of jewelry or made into a titanium pipe.

Yes, titanium is amazing. But it isn´t Black!

Its white, perhaps a little smoky or steel grey, but never naturally black. In order to have black titanium rings its necessary to heat the metal or pass it through an electric bath or otherwise subject it to a process to change it from white to black. And that is why sometimes the black on titanium, that´s actually not part of titanium, may disappear or become scratched and ugly looking long before the ring is very old. This surprises many ring buyers because one of the main reasons to buy titanium is the fact that they are almost indestructible and won´t get scruffy looking and will withstand a lot of abuse.

So how do we produce a black titanium ring?

It all begins with the grade of titanium that the rings will be made from. Although there are some 50 grades only half of them are used for commercial purposes, and even fewer are used in the making of black titanium rings.

A specific alloy with the right blend of trace metals and elements react to high temperatures by becoming black. The black forms from the outside of the metal and, depending on the length of time subjected to the heat, the temperature and other atmospheric conditions, the black will penetrate or deepen into the titanium.

Once the blackening has begun, the outer side of the metal being treated becomes hard and changes to a structure resembling ceramic. Therefore black titanium rings are extremely hard, but the problem of the black chipping or getting scratched off depends entirely on the depth to which the blackening has occurred.

Best Black Titanium Rings

The highest quality rings have been treated until the blackness has gone about half-way through the thickness of the ring. These rings will not lose their black so easily. However, since this is a costly and time consuming procedure, the less expensive products are blackened only superficially. This will account for the huge price variation in mens titanium rings that appear similar.

If a black titanium ring is $30 and another is $300 there is a very good reason. It’s not just because someone is earning more money. In the case of mens titanium wedding rings you really do get what you pay for. It is essential for you to know exactly what you’re buying or that eternal ring you slip on your finger may be very temporary.

However, if you’re looking for fun rings that aren’t going to take much abuse and aren’t going to be wedding or engagement rings then go for an inexpensive design that suits your fancy and your budget.

There are some excellent options for a titanium ring that you can order online and that can be a great gift for a groomsman or a friend without putting you in the poorhouse, and they are one of the most popular mens rings today.

Here are some suggestions in a variety of qualities and price ranges:

Top:

TRITON ® Titanium Serpentine Band – $149.00 -$329.00

ARTCARVED ® Black Titanium Ring – $249.00

EDWARD MIRELL Black Titanium Ring with Diamond and 14K Gold- $557.00 – $795.00

Mid to Low:

A basic black titanium ring of medium quality, but that can be worn everyday will run you about $60 – $80.

A brushed titanium wedding ring, or a grooved titanium wedding ring in lower quality is $60 -$70.

A unique mens titanium ring is the Mens Skinz Titanium Ring with a jaguar, tiger or leopard animal print embossing. The quality is medium but it’s fun at about $45.

Men wear rings. Yes they do. Even if your dad doesn’t wear anything other than his gold wedding band, and even if your husband only wears his wedding band three times a year and once on your anniversary, there are zillions of men who love their jewelry as much as the ladies. And what’s more, men who love rings look for distinctive pieces that go with their individuality more so than women who may have a whole jewelry box full of rings given as gifts or purchased on impulse.

Gentlemen and their rings is a whole different world. Men’s rings are works of art carefully selected as statements about who they are. The problem is finding those exclusive pieces. Unique men’s titanium rings are filling a gap that has existed for a long time since they are strong, durable and now customizable and stylish as never before.

Men’s Titanium Rings Tales

I have a male friend who, for as long as I can remember, has had a ring almost on every finger. For each ring he has a story of where it came from or how it arrived on his hand. Some were from ladies, others found in unusual places, and one on his baby finger was made of iron since he’s an engineer. But as I said he had rings on ALMOST every finger, which means he had one finger that, for a very long time, remained bare.
When I first asked him why, he relied that it was for a unique ring that would one day come to him unexpectedly. And one day it did come to him. On a flight from Yemen to London he met a lady with as many rings on her fingers as he had. And she too had one empty finger. About 6 months ago they were married and, naturally, the rings they selected were of utmost interest to all their friends who knew them both to be avid ring collectors. What had they chosen? Titanium rings, of course.

Another man I met while I traveled as a journalist, also an international correspondent, wore several rings of unique design. However, while we were together on assignment in a very dangerous region, I removed every piece of jewelry I wore, including my earrings, while he did not. When I asked why he said he had several times been mugged, help up at gun point, robbed of everything he had on him including a cheap digital watch, $5 sunglasses, and half worn-out Nikes, but had never once had anyone attempted to take his rings. He laughed when he said, “they don’t sparkle, they’re not gold, the brand isn’t printed anywhere visible and so thieves don’t think they’re valuable – they’re just pieces of titanium!”
The funny thing was that I later learned that one of his rings was a titanium piece made by a London designer and had cost him almost £700. I’m glad I didn’t know their value until we were safely on a plane, with our stories ready for our editor, because it would have made me nervous.

An Italian artist who I met in Rome collected turquoise and then had them set into titanium rings because he said silver turned black with all the cleaners he used when he painted. His hands were a work of art, even if his paintings never sold.

The point is that men wear rings, sometimes more than women, and the designs are often more bold and make bigger statements than the little delicate rings for the ladies. Men who love jewelry really love their rings. And recently I have been surprised how many men are choosing titanium rings instead of gold or silver or platinum. First because, unless you are a flashy gold kind of guy, gold isn’t intrinsically a man’s metal except for a traditional wedding band. And silver looks worn very quickly and dents and gets bent out of shape, and platinum is a bit pricey if you like to indulge in ring binges.

Titanium, however, is the choice of gentlemen who work hard because they are durable. Most of the men I know with titanium rings said they chose them because of the unusual modern designs and because there are incredibly unique products that simply are not available in other metals.

And they were not referring to the industrial styles. Some men have unique titanium rings that are polished to a satin finish and have a chrome-like reflection. Others choose brushed titanium rings with directional texture and others have Celtic etchings and knots or cables. Some have open tops with no gemstones, others prefer masculine-square, and a few have selected unique titanium rings with wooden inlays.

For unique men’s titanium rings that aren’t just metal or precious stone but have color, there are anodized titanium rings. “Anodized” means that the titanium has been subjected to oxidization through a thermal treatment or an electrolytic bath that creates a colorful oxide layer on top of the titanium. Although the actual titanium ring has not changed color, the visible outer layer can be luminous green-turquoise-teal, blue-periwinkle-marine or reddish-purple-magenta.

It’s not about dying the ring or altering its metallic structure, it’s just a reaction that titanium has to heat and electrical currents. There are very unique men’s titanium rings that have been anodized, polished, brushed, etched or blackened.

Unique Black Titanium Rings for Men

Good quality black titanium rings are a unique choice for mens titanium rings. Black titanium rings are made from high grade titanium and heated or treated to produce the black effect. It is similar, in theory, to anodized titanium, but different in that if properly done it will not be just a thin coating on top of the titanium but should penetrate the metal, at least halfway through the ring.

Cheap black titanium rings are not a good choice. They will lose their blackness, and can be easily scratched, defeating the purpose of going with durable, scratch and dent resistant titanium in the first place. You should be paying no less than $200 to $1,000 for good quality black titanium rings. The $50 rings are not worth it!

Here are some that may be worth considering:

EDWARD MIRELL Black Titanium Flat Band -$245.00

ARTCARVED Black Titanium Band – $389.00

ARTCARVED Black Titanium Ring – $510.00

EDWARD MIRELL Black Titanium Comfort Fit Band -$229.00

EDWARD MIRELL Black Titanium Ring- $440.00

TRITON Black Titanium Ring -$745.00

TRITON Black Titanium Tension Set Ring – $629.00
